The Research Fund for Waldenstrom's, Ltd. is pleased to announce the following recipients of our 2001 Smokler Research Grants. The grants are named in honor of Arnold Smokler who pioneered the first services for WM patients everywhere.

- College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University in New York City, Division of Medical Oncology and Hematology - Dr. Gwen Nichols and Dr. Cy Stein. Protocol: Modulation of the Activity of BCL-2 Family Members in Waldenstrom's Macroglobulinemia

- University of Alberta, Department of Oncology in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, Dr. Linda Pilarski and Dr. Andrew Belch. Identification and Monitoring of the Unique Molecular Signature for Waldenstrom's Macroglobulinemia

- Jointly with the Waldenstrom's Cancer Fund
Molecular Immunology Group, Tenovus Laboratory, University of Southampton Hospitals. Southampton, U.K., Dr. Surinder S. Sahota
Defining the Maturation Potential of the Malignant Clone of Waldenstrom's Macroglobulinemia

Our Medical Advisory Board recommended funding for all of these both for their scientific validity and the excellent credentials of the applicants. Faced with a dilemma we therefore have awarded $20,000 to each of the applicants and recommended that they reapply for a second year of funding in 2002.
